Mupen Launcher Updated Again!
The SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher is out of date. Use MupenRocket instead!
The SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher has undergone another update. The files necessary to launch games with MP64+ are now included in the Launcher, so you don’t have to have Mupen64Plus installed in order for this to work, and it will work no matter which folder you put it in!
You can download the launcher at http://speedofmac.com/speedofmac_mp64+_launcher.html.
Enjoy!
Hi, I’m using your launcher and the buttons in it seem a little finicky. For example the Config Controller options just plain doesn’t work for me. And to open a rom, even if it shows in the on-screen directory, will not load unless I get to it through the Command + O way. If there are ways to fix this please let me know. As well neither the Launcher or the roms are in the Applications folders, if that can help you diagnose my problem as something more than a bug in the software.
Besides that thanks for making this launcher its great.
Hi Jon,
Thanks for letting me know about those two bugs! They were easy to fix, and now the “Open Selected Rom” button and the “Open Gamepad Config File” menu item should work properly. I’ve uploaded the updated launcher to http://www.speedofmac.com/speedofmac_mp64+_launcher.html. Thanks, again!
I am running 10.5.8 Intel. I launched the app and it immediately crashes. Launching from the command line reveals: LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -10810 for the file /Applications/Mupen64Plus/SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher.app.
Also, launching from the MacOS folder gives another error:
dyld: unknown required load command 0×80000022
Trace/BPT trap
I’m afraid that the launcher only works for Snow Leopard (10.6). A poster named Mike and I threw together a little Leopard launcher a while back, and it might help you out: http://www.mediafire.com/?ougvuywywzw.
Hello.
I’m French and I speak a little english.
So, I have download Mupen64Plus and install in “application”. I use this launcher but I can’t open the rom. I don’t understand how do for use correctly this program.
Thanks you
Bonjour,
Hi, I’ve read a lot about your launcher on other forums. However, there seems to be a server problem and I cannot download it. It’s a shame because I compiled CuteMupen from source (that worked swell, actually!) but it’s extremely picky when it comes to selecting Mupen64 directories. This seems like a much better alternative to *my* Applescript launcher, due to my inability to change Mupen64′s resolution from either it or .conf files. It’s becoming a bit ridiculous for me, unfortunately.
@Kuribo
It is quite a thing to do with Applescript, that’s for sure! Is the download link at http://speedofmac.com/speedofmac_mp64+_launcher.html working properly? I just tested it and I was able to download it fine. If it still isn’t working for you, send me an e-mail (info at speedofmac dot com) and I’ll e-mail it your way.
Your app doesn’t list .z64 files as valid options to load, yet mupen64plus seems able to load them from the terminal.
Any way you could add the option to pick those via the add rom dialog?
Thanks for catching that! I’ve uploaded an updated launcher that will let you choose .z64 files. If you have any other issues, just let me know.
I changed the videoplugin to Glide as I tried to play Mario 64 w/ Rice, but it was super flickery. It works great w/ Glide, but I can’t figure out how to make the screen-fullscreen, and how to remove the framerate. I tried opening up the config file, and setting fullscreen to true, and a few other things, but I just can’t get anything to work. The options in the prefernces dont seem to change anything. Thanks for any help. your program is great!
help! i can’t download the file!
it says: contact the administrator
pls do something!
Hmm, it’s downloading for me no problem. I was having a bit of trouble connecting to my webspace earlier, so that might’ve had something to do with your problem. Could you try it again and let me know how it goes?
I think that Glide does have some issues going full screen, and it might keep the FPS visible. I’ll look into it and see what I can find.
that’s not working. it says: internal server error. please contact system administrator.
thx for the link, but…
i don’t have my list of roms in the window and when i want to run a rom, it’s not working. nothing’s happening. heelp…
(i can only run example.v64 from terminal)
@matouman
Have you set your default rom directory in the preferences window? If you haven’t, go to the SpeedofMac MP64+ menu item and choose Preferences (or press Command + ,), then click the Rom Directory tab, and click on the button there to choose the folder where you keep your roms. After that, they should always appear in the launcher’s main window.
If this is unclear or if your problem is something different, let me know!
Hey i downloaded SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher, its in my applications tab on my finder along with the folder you told me to rename Mupen64Plus within that folder is example.v64, mupen64plus, Readme.txt, run_arach.sh, run_glide.sh, and run_rice.sh. I download a Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time ROM and its named LOZOOT.z64 it’s located on the desktop. I go and start up SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher and this screen comes up http://i56.tinypic.com/2hhhje0.png not sure what to do here but i’m guessing it hit open selected ROM but nothing happens so i go to File<Open Rom and then i open up my LOZOOT.z64 on my desktop
@dnoonan
oh yeah i forgot to say my problem after i do that nothing happens
@admin
Hi,
I’m experiencing a similar problem. I downloaded the program just fine, however, I cannot configure the controllers and I cannot open a .z64 ROM.
Help please!
For anyone who’s having problems with the launcher, give this alpha release a try: http://speedofmac.com/SpeedofMac_Mupen_Launcher_1.2.zip. You don’t need to download Mupen64+ separately; it’s already in there.
Hi, think there is some great stuff going on here, I had managed to launch games from the terminal with mupen64, no luck with the launcher. When i choose a rom file, it opens terminal and nothing else happens. I wanted to try your alpha release but the link is dead.
Seem to have worked it out, I set the directory for where my roms are located. and then had no problems
Works like a charm, but there’s a couple of things that i’m having problems with.
1) I can’t seem to locate the save file to the game I’m currently playing, there is nothing in my share folder [the original game uses battery back up, not sure if that makes a difference?]
2) I’m having some difficulty using cheat/gameshark codes via the terminal.
Can anyone help?
PS. I’m on OS X 10.6.4
Hi,
I tried downloading the launcher, but when I click on the link, it takes me to a page that says ‘File does not exist. Make sure you specified correct file name.’ Thank you for any help you can offer.
Max
@Max
The link should be working now; thanks for letting me know!
@admin
I’m sorry, it’s me again. It still won’t show up for me after I click on the icon. I’m taken to the same page. Thanks.
Max
@Max
Ah, I see. I thought you meant the link further up in the comments. I’ve fixed the link at http://www.speedofmac.com/speedofmac_mp64+_launcher.html. Thanks for your patience!
@admin
Perfect, it all works greats now. Thank you very much for your help and your speedy replies. Launcher is a great program for those daunted by terminal. Thanks again.
Max
Hi (I’m French so hope my english will be good !)
First thanks a lot for developing such a great tool !
Unfortunately I have the same problem as some other people here : I’ve correctly set the rom directory but nothing appears in the main window and nothing happens when I click on “file” “open rom”. There are no spaces in either file or rom names.
I’ve downloaded this file you gave above : http://speedofmac.com/SpeedofMac_Mupen_Launcher_1.2.zip
Now I can see the list of roms in the main window but nothing happens when I click to open one.
I opened the console window before launching a rom and it says :
21/01/11 16:50:34 SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher[1529] *** -[SomMupenGuiAppDelegate awakeFromNib]: File Anne-Celine:Users:ACD:.local:share:mupen64plus:save wasn’t found. (error -43)
I don’t understand cause this is not the directory I set, and when I check in the launcher it’s the good one. How can I fix this ?
Thanks a lot !
I’m really stupid technologically, and so I’m sorry if this subsequently seems like a really stupid question, but I’ve downloaded the most recent version of the Launcher and that Alpha one you uploaded above, but every time I open it, it says “The application SpeedofMac MP64 + Launcher quit unexpectedly.” I’ve followed all the instructions on the instruction page of this site, and I can’t figure out why it’s telling me that. Any ideas?
@Madyo
Je crois que votre anglais est meilleure que ma français!
Thanks for the information! Could you open Terminal.app and enter the following code and press the Return key, then try the launcher?
mkdir ~/.local/share/mupen64plus/save
The error occurred because you don’t have a save state directory set up, so I’ve fixed the launcher for people who don’t yet have that folder.
I’ve uploaded a fixed version of launcher (use the link you provided).
If the above code fixed the problem, you won’t need to download that new version.
Thanks again for showing me what was wrong!
@Dustin
What are your computer specs? Are you running OS X Snow Leopard?
@admin
No, I have OS X 10.5.8.
@Dustin
The launcher uses AppleScriptObjC, which is only available in 10.6. I’ll soon be posting builds of a new Mupen64Plus frontend (https://bitbucket.org/auria/wxmupen64plus) that will work on 10.5, though!
Hi,
I downloaded the file for version 1.2 of the launcher found here:
http://speedofmac.com/SpeedofMac_Mupen_Launcher_1.2.zip
I went to play a game using version 1.2 and after selecting a rom I clicked on “Open Selected Rom”. Nothing happened. So seeing earlier posts I did check into the command to fix the directory by using…
mkdir ~/.local/share/mupen64plus/save
but the Terminal says “File exists”. And yet when I ran a search in the Finder under “Go to Folder” I was never able to find the directory at all. I also looked at the settings in the prefs and re-did my config for the Xbox 360 controller but nothing seems to make it launch a rom. The launcher itself is accessible and usable up to until the part where I want to launch a game. I am running OSX 10.6.6. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
BTW, for those interested in the XBox 360 controller part, I found this website that shows how to do that. However, I was only able to get it to work on version 1.0 of the speedofmac launcher as I am unable to get the new version 1.2 to launch games for testing the controller config properly. Here’s the link:
http://uramac.com/uramac/2010/09/11/how-to-configure-the-xbox-360-controller-with-mupen64plus-mac-ver/
Hope this helps!
@admin
That’s great! I’ve been having the same issues as Dustin.
@Matt
Hi Matt,
You probably won’t be able to find that folder because it’s in a hidden folder: /Users/[you]/.local. If you want to open up the folder just to make sure, you can type in the following in Terminal.app:
open ~/.local
After you try to open a rom and nothing happens, could you open up Console.app (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app) and see if there’s anything relevant in there?
@Josh
My wxMupen64Plus page went up today: http://speedofmac.com/emulation/wxmupen64plus.php. Leave a comment on that page letting me know if it works for you!
@admin
Success!!!
I ended up deleting the speedofmac Mupen Launcher 1.2 with an app called App Cleaner, then re-downloaded the app, re-installed it, and re-configured my controller settings, etc.
With that fresh new start it now works really well and my Xbox 360 controller is working with it too!!! Thanks for the other suggestions, that helped me a lot in understanding the hidden folder thing. Very much appreciative indeed!
For those who have a similar problem to mine and you want a fresh start; check out the App Cleaner application. The best part is that it is FREE! Here’s a link to the website…
http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/
It deletes the app, the preferences file in the library, and other files that are related to the app. And it lets you choose which of the files to delete so you don’t delete your saved files/states folder!
Hope this helps others and thanks again!
@Matt
That’s great news! Thanks for letting me know about the settings that were causing trouble; I didn’t even think about outdated preference files and whatnot. AppCleaner’s been treating me well for a few years now; it’s a great piece of software.
Thanks again for the tip!
@Admin.
I thought I was computer savvy but apparently not..
I’ve gone through all three of the n64 emulators made for mac (or the only three that i could find anyway) Sixtyforce didn’t work at all, with any of the versions, and Mupen64 worked, but as the control scheme was (i assume) created for a desktop computer I don’t have the buttons on my keyboard to use all the controls, so it’s rendered kinda pointless to play.
I’ve downloaded Mupen64Plus, but can’t get my head around the Terminal to open it – I can find Mupen and know the command to open it but it gives the following message:

I also downloaded the SpeedofMac MP64+ Launcher and while it opens fine, and I’ve set the right folder as the rom directory, it doesn’t show up any of my roms and when I select them through File>Open Rom> it doesn’t do anything.
Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if I seem stupid.
@Admin
Ignore last post, I got it figured – more computer-savvy than I though, obviously.
Thanks for the great program
Still can’t get donkeykong64 to work though.
@Gg
I’m glad you got it working! What did you do in order to get it to work? Also, I’m not sure whether Donkey Kong 64 is supported by Mupen64Plus, but you might be able to find out after some Googling.
I was so excited to find this launcher. I’ve been wanting to use MupenPlus for months now but I didn’t know how to use terminal very well (I can pretty much only type in code others have created). Thank you so much. XD
Anyway, I have two questions/problems. The first is I cannot change the buttons for the controls. I’m using the PS3 controler (I don’t even know if the keyboard work or what keys I need to use) and my R2 button is start, pressing down on the R3 toggle is A, my B button is start, etc. I tried configuring it but I only get this list in text edit that tell me my button in like code.
My second concern is save. While I was starting a game, I noticed my terminal saying: Core Warning: couldn’t open sram file ‘/Users/Dunkel/.local/share/mupen64plus/save/Harvest Moon 64 (U) [!].sra’ for reading
Does this message mean I don’t have save set up?
@Keloura
You’re very welcome! When I get some time I might try to add a new feature or two to this old launcher.
That error sounds like it’s having a tough time reading save files. Have you saved a game yet? That folder might not exist. To make it, open up Terminal.app and type in the following:
open /Users/Dunkel/.local/share/mupen64plusthen create a folder called “save”.
For the controls, see this page for Mupen64Plus’ default keyboard bindings: http://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/wiki/KeyboardSetup. There should be an option in one of the menus for my launcher to open up the gamepad config file, and you can edit the gamepad configuration from there. To find out what to call the buttons on your gamepad, check out SDLJoyTest-osx.zip from http://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/downloads/list. For gamepad setup, though, I recommend using wxMupen64Plus:
wxMupen64Plus is a complete Mupen64Plus front-end that has graphical keyboard and gamepad configuration, so it might make set-up easier. To boot, my launcher should be able to use the preferences that you set in wxMupen64Plus without you having to do anything.
I hope this helps!
Hey there, I was wondering if there was a good tutorial out there to get a xbox360 controller working with SpeedOfMac. I’m having a really hard time trying to figure it out myself! THANKS!
